The first artists for Åland Sea Jazz in August have been released!

25.11.2020

The Åland Sea Jazz festival will have its premiere on the 6-7 of August 2021. The event will be held in the unique environment of Mariehamns Sjökvarter (the Maritime Quarter) and the first artists to be announced are delightful singer Anni Elif and the soulful saxophonist Manuel Dunkel.

Åland Sea Jazz is one of the events in the new, internationally attractive Archipelago Sea Jazz – series that was postponed to summer 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The concert tickets are now finally up for sale and the event organisers are moving confidently towards next summer, prepared to implement safety measures if needed.

Åland Sea Jazz is a high-quality Scandinavian festival set in the historical environment of Mariehamns Sjökvarter, which showcases traditional wooden boat culture. The opening day concerts will be held in the hall of the Segeljakten Alanta association, where wooden boat Alanta is currently being built using traditional techniques. The plan is that Alanta will be launched during Tall Ships Races in July and can then be admired in its element during Åland Sea Jazz.

The idyllic jazz festival starts on Friday the 6th of August with saxophone virtuoso Manuel Dunkel. During the concert, the audience is taken to the core of jazz through fascinating, rarely heard songs composed by John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk among others. Manuel Dunkel’s Standards Trio is completed by Antti Lötjönen who is famous as the pillar of Finnish jazz base as well as the skilled swing drummer Jaska Lukkarinen.

Friday night then continues onwards into the lovely world of Edith Södergran’s poetry when luminous composer-singer Anni Elif and her band enters the stage with their Edith-repertoire. Anni, a multitalent in the international music scene, takes listeners on an intimate journey where beautiful compositions meet futuristic soundscapes and surprise-filled improvisation.

Pre-tickets for Friday are available on Tiketti. When purchasing tickets you have the possibility to support the protection of the Baltic Sea by donating a sum of your choosing to the John Nurminen Foundation.

The entire program for Åland Sea Jazz will be released in the beginning of 2021.
